Philomena is Stephen Frear’s 2013 drama about an Irish woman, Philomena Lee, played by Judi Dench. Philomena searches for the son she was forced to relinquish for adoption in the 1950s.
Based on Martin Sixsmith’s non-fiction book, the film critiques the secrecy around Ireland’s mother-and-baby homes. It has since become a widely recognised reference point in adoption conversations. Philomena blends humour with loss, secrecy and reconciliation and received four Oscar nominations and won a BAFTA.
