Transracial adoption

At Adopt London, we’re passionate about ensuring that every child’s cultural identity is honoured and every family feels equipped for the journey.

What is transracial adoption?

Transracial adoption is where adoptive parents are of a different racial or ethnic background from the child they adopt. Naturally, this means that the child’s heritage differs from that of their adoptive parents. Transracial adoption offers an opportunity for diversity within families. It also, however, presents unique challenges.

Transracial cultural considerations

It’s important for adoptive families to understand that in transracial adoption, a child’s identity, lived experiences, and sense of belonging may not always reflect their own. Recognising and valuing these differences helps children feel seen, supported and protected

Factsheet
  • Many children in a transracial adoption placement grow up with a dual identity shaped by both their family environment and their racial or cultural background. This can be complex as they form a sense of self, which is why we believe their own heritage should be openly celebrated from an early age.
  • Maintaining a strong connection to a child’s heritage plays a vital role in their development of self-esteem and identity. We encourage families to engage with cultural organisations, events and communities and surround children with books, TV shows and toys that reflect their identity, and that affirm and celebrate their heritage. Families can promote children’s culture to help them feel proud of who they are, especially to protect them from the harm caused by racism. This can include telling family stories, joining cultural celebrations, learning their native language, and visiting the country their family comes from.

Transracial adoption FAQs

What are the best ways to support an adopted child’s cultural identity? +

There are many ways to support an adopted child’s cultural identity, including celebrating their heritage through books, traditions, media, toys and food. Involve them in their culture in ways that would be natural within their birth community. Embracing openness and being comfortable talking about race, culture, ethnicity, heritage, and belonging is paramount.

Do I need to live in a diverse area in order to be eligible for transracial adoption? +

No, it is not a requirement that you live in a diverse area in order to be eligible for transracial adoption. However, this can make it easier for a child to feel represented and included. If you live in London, you’ll already be in a culturally diverse area, which naturally offers more opportunities for children to see people who look like them and experience a broader range of cultural representation in daily life.
